Contact Staff is a style of Staff Spinning that focuses on ways that staffs can be manipulated without the use of hands. What is currently considered Contact Staff is derived from the ancient Chinese art Fei Cha, and popularised by the talented staff spinner MCP (Michael Caden Pike). Because of its short history, there are still many styles being developed, such as ground work and controlling the staff with legs and feet.

Because of the ways in which your body must manipulate the staff, contact staffs are not simple poles as Spinning Staffs are. Contact Staffs require most of the weight to be placed at the ends, allowing for the angular momentum crucial to certain tricks. They also require a fair amount of grip tape, which will dictate how well you can manipulate your staff.

As it is easiest to spin when the grip is in direct contact with skin, clothing is a large factor in Contact Staff, making it less appealing to spin during the winter. It is also difficult to spin with headphones as there are many tricks involving the neck, and many recommend Bluetooth headphones to solve this problem.
