Poi originated in New Zealand with the Maori, initially used in cultural events with vocals and music. Today, Poi has spread across the globe and only vaguely resembles traditional Poi. Poi requires quite a bit of coordination, as you are manipulating a prop in each hand, often moving them in split-time or in opposite directions.

Modern Poi has taken a lot from other arts, such as dance, and a variety of object manipulation styles. While Poi has become quite widespread, modern Poi is still relatively young, with a lot of aspects being still explored.

Two aspects that are being explored at the moment are Partner Poi and Tech Poi. Partner Poi involves two people creating patterns or just dancing together with either one or two sets of poi. A common technique in Partner Poi is tunneling, where the two individuals stand in line and spin extensions, to create new patterns that would not be possible with only one spinner. Tech Poi aims to look at all of the possible movements of Poi to create new unique moves from this. It thus encompasses pretty much anything that can be done with Poi. Tech Poi has begun to incorporate three or even four poi at once, along with aspects of traditional Juggling.
